If you may have notices, there are quite a view items on offer that have “Sydney East, NSW, Australia” as their location. This is because they are picked up from ‘sydney_east’ mailing list of freecycle community. Freecycle have a bunch of great people who care about the environment and try to recycle stuff. The community has many mail lists for different places around the world. People send mails to those lists if they have something to give away or if they are looking for some free second hand items. Anyone can subscribe – we did.
From time to time we poll the mail box, parse the emails that have arrived, strip out all ads and if those emails offer something we put them on the web site. Obviously to keep the site up to date we also look for the emails that announce that a particular item is no longer available. We delete those offers that are already taken.
It is also necessary to mention that we use TimeAlert to trigger the mailbox polling. It’s a great online tool that would send an http request in regular time intervals to a URL you have configured.
Do you have permission from freecycle and/or its members to display the ads the members post ?
My ad appeared here on your site yet I never gave you nor freecycle permission for that information to be posted anywhere else other than the freecycle group.
As a moderator of Freecycle SydneyCentral and SydneyNW, I know you do not have permission for this activity
You are being reported to other moderators and the Australian Freecycle authorities
Please desist from extracting posts immediately !
Funny how people in this day and age argue about laws and “copyright” issues instead of working together on making this planet green. I guess that is where this “green” evolution may fail, short sighted people working alone instead of seeing the big picture.
I am a member of sydney north west freecycle network and have no issues with this site using my posts – after all – ALL I CARE about is that my free stuff that i dont need finds a new home.
Anything to make recycling more accessible to everyone is a good step for this planet and for the future of my kids.
Work together not against each other
re Pacyfs message
Messages or content for a website should not be stolen nor borrowed in any form without prior permission.
ALL the owner of this website had to do if he too wants to recycle goods is to design there own website with its OWN content .
There are now several websites around who are doing just that without the need to STEAL or borrow messages or content from any other website.
just an example;
http://www.e-cycled.com
This is a great example of a recycling website – Note that this website uses its own program , and asks its OWN members to register and post there OWN messages.
Yes its great to be green and great to recycle but if the owner of this website “throwless.com” felt the need to break away from the already quite successful freecycle program then he should have at least had the decency not to take short cuts by stealing copyrighted info .
Freecycle have been around a long time and to have someone pop up overnight and USE there ideas as well as there content is just plain “theft”.
that is all.
Re Freecycle member post
What ideas is throwless “stealing” from freecycle? recycling?
the idea of recycle community? the emails?
The only issue that I can see here is the reposting of email which in reality i doubt it is breaking the law. From your f trigger happy freecycle Admin – the link to the explanation of copyright page contains this section:
This is a quote by the way from this page before you guys tell me that i am breaking the law:
“What has to be considered is the nature and content of the email, the purpose for which it is being forwarded, and to whom it is being forwarded. You will also need to consider the expectations of the originator; did that person set any conditions on the further communication of their email, or expect that it would not be forwarded to anyone else, or would not be forwarded to a particular recipient? Further, you will need to ask yourself if the originator will suffer any damage or object or complain if you forward the email.”
I am a member of freecycle, I dont remember when I signed that I have explicitly told freecycle that any of my posting is not to be forwarded to anyone?
I dont remember signing anything that would make my email to be considered as a property of freecycle as well ?
In fact i dont remember that there were any copyright information presented to me before I signed?
Anyway all this is legal junk that people use to intimidate others with and as I said before recycle is so important in this day and age that we all need to work together.
Why dont freecycle people and throwless people sit together and discuss how they work together before intimidating emails are forwarded around?
As a freecycler myself I think a front page like this is a great idea and searching engine that will help me search for specific item or area is something that I would certainly use.
[...] Someone has already pointed the original post I wrote a while ago were I described how the emails from freecycle end up on ThrowLess: http://throwless.wordpress.com/2007/06/06/items-from-freecycle/ [...]
my understanding of the issue is not to do with copyright or law, but privacy. As a member of freecycle I have the option to state that I do not want my email address listed when I post an item, however it has been noted by another member that when their listing appeared on throwless their email address did appear. This leaves us all open to spammers and abusers of the web.
